The New England Revolution, a professional soccer club based in Foxborough, may be moving. The owner of the club, The Kraft Group, is interested in constructing a new $100 million soccer stadium in Assembly Square, Somerville.
Currently, the team plays at Gilette Stadium, which has a massive capacity of 68,756. Unfortunately for the Revolution, the club often struggles to fill even half the seats available. The club is looking to relocate to a smaller stadium.
President of the New England Revolution, Brian Billelo, said: “I can confirm that we are still in communication with Somerville officials about potential stadium locations in their city, including the possibility of a facility in Assembly Square, which is an attractive site for development with its significant transportation infrastructure and proximity to downtown Boston.” (Boston Business Journal)
In response Mayor Joseph Curtatone stated, “Assembly Square is an infrastructure-ready site with good highway access and construction is underway on an Orange line MBTA stop. We’d love to have the Revolution as a partner and we think the Kraft Group is the best philanthropic community partner anyone could have.” (Boston Business Journal)
The club believes that access to major transportation hubs and a closer proximity to Boston will help increase attendance.
Another option for the New England Revolution would be the 34-acre Wonderland Greyhound Park. The new location of the stadium will be revealed in coming months.
This project is one of many attempts to revitalize Assembly Square.
