Hannaford Supermarkets to Close Marlborough Store, 160 Employees Affected

Hannaford Supermarkets will lay off 160 employees from its Marlborough store in mid-September, according to a filing with the state. The layoffs are set to take effect on September 13, and all employees at the store will be impacted. Workers have already been notified.

The Marlborough location on Boston Post Road West is closing because the company was unable to renew its lease, though the store will remain open until September 2. Hannaford has expressed gratitude to its associates and customers and plans to assist affected employees by offering transfers to other local stores where possible.

The vacated store is expected to be taken over by Shaw’s Supermarket, though an opening date has not yet been announced. Hannaford, based in Scarborough, Maine, operates roughly 180 stores and employs 26,000 people, with other Massachusetts locations in Waltham, Lowell, Clinton, and elsewhere.

The store is part of the RK Center plaza, which includes Marshalls, Five Guys, and Longhorn Steakhouse. The property is managed by RK Centers, a commercial real estate firm based in Needham.
