Dogpatch Labs, a sort of next-generation incubator for high tech start-ups, said it plans to move its Cambridge operations to much larger space Feb. 1.

Dogpatch currently occupies about 7,500 square feet at 222 Third St. in Cambridge. Plans call for Dogpatch to relocate to about 13,000 square feet at Microsoft Corp.’s New England Research & Development Center, known as N.E.R.D., which is located at One Cambridge Center in Cambridge.

Created by Polaris Venture Partners, a venture capital firm with offices in Waltham, Dogpatch doesn’t think of itself as a traditional incubator. It says it’s an “open community, ” an “eco-system” where start-up founders can associate and network with investors, outside advisors, mentors, and business and technology partners.

In its new location, Dogpatch will continue to provide entrepreneurs with space, connectivity, and “open-sourced” collaboration through introductions, mentoring, frequent industry events, community interaction, and public open houses, Dogpatch said in a press release.

Dogpatch Labs Cambridge added that it now houses more than 55 entrepreneurs, and the new space will enable it to expand the roster of residents in 2011.
