Best Buy giving away iPhones

Best Buy Co. Inc. is offering the iPhone 3GS for free on Friday, breaking new ground in discounting of Apple Inc. products.

It’s not the latest version of the popular smartphone and it doesn’t have enough storage at eight gigabits for those who want to load up a lot of pictures and songs. The deal also comes with a requires, two-year contract with AT&T Inc.

Discounts are rarely offered on Apple products and free is about as discounted as you get. The model offered normally sells for $99 from Best Buy with a two-year AT&T contract and lists for $499 without the contract.

The deal was announced by Best Buy on its Twitter account: “It’s true: iPhone 3GS 8 GB SKU 1048998 free to qualified customers! One Day Only Fri Dec10 http://bbyurl.us/freeiphone #bbytweets.”

Radio Shack has been offering a sale of its own on the new iPhone 4 that ends on Saturday. It’s taking $50 off on the 16 gigabit and 32 gigabit models for new and eligible upgrade customers. Customers trading in a 3G get $75 off and trading in a 3GS gets you $125 off. That brings the price on the 16 gigabit model down to about $25 with a 3G trade-in and $75 with a 3GS trade-in.

Best Buy and Radio Shack operates multiple Central Texas locations.
