According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the word suburb has three different meanings that are all related. The first definition is an “outlying part of a city or town”, the second is “a smaller community adjacent to or within commuting distance of a city”, and the third is “the residential area on the outskirts of a city or large town”.

Cambridge Daily reports that Cambridge has recently been deemed a suburb. It is quick to reject that name claiming that Cambridge is not remotely a suburb. In fact, Cambridge was named the most exciting suburb in America along with Somerville, but does not want this honor. Cambridge stated that it was reasonable to see the excitement level in its city because of its nightlife, active life, music venues, and restaurants, but that that had no relation to being a suburb. These are just some of Cambridge’s high points. Its the point of being called a suburb that really has affected Cambridge the most.

A Movato content editor, Randy Nelson, has stated that in 2014, the staff at the Movato want to turn people off to the fact that suburbs are boring. In order to do so, the staff has gathered data about different smaller cities and towns in order to prove that they were suburbs, and had the excitement levels equal to those of larger cities. Movato stated that “suburbs are set up to play the proverbial second fiddle to their bigger brethren”.

However,  according to the definition of the “suburb” it doesn’t mean that at all.  A key word in the definition of suburb is the word “outlying”. Referring to the Merriam-Webster dictionary again, the word outlying means “remote from a center or main body”. Cambridge isn’t an outlying area from Boston, and its also not solely a residential area. Cambridge has office spaces, industrial spaces, retail spaces, and countless other types within.

Cambridge is an exciting area, that is in fact not a suburb as Movato recently stated. Although it may be smaller in comparison to Boston as a whole, it does not outlay Boston. Cambridge is a wonderful place to live, or have a business there. Cambridge has great potential to grow further throughout the years to come.
