Construction has commenced on a residential building in Kendall Square that is set to become the tallest building in Cambridge, investors announced last week.
The building will rise at 121 Broadway and stand over 450 feet tall, according to architects on the project. Boston Properties (BXP), a real estate investment trust, announced that construction had begun on the building in its quarterly earnings report released last month.
The residential building is expected to consist of 439 rental units and 37 stories and cost an estimated $598 million, according to BXP.
The apartments will neighbor 290 Binney St. and 300 Binney St., two other properties being developed by BXP. The Binney Street developments are expected to be life sciences buildings and are pre-leased to AstraZeneca.
The residential tower will feature a sky deck on the 37th level, a terrace on the sixth level, a garden lounge, library, and a dog run, according to the architect company.
The building will also offer 20% of its units for affordable housing and 5% for middle income housing.
The Broadway and Binney Street construction is part of BXP’s Kendall Square Redevelopment project. The Cambridge Redevelopment Authority has worked with BXP to relocate a substation out of an East Cambridge residential neighborhood into an underground location within Kendall Square since 2019.
A garage that was located at 290 Binney St. was demolished in March 2023, and foundation and utility work has been ongoing since then.
