Mayor Menino announced today that the popular New York based grocery store Wegmans will be opening in the Fenway neighborhood. The family owned grocery chain opened its doors in 1916 and today boasts 78 stores in 5 states and employs over 40,000 people. There are no details yet about the specifics of the store except it will include a café, prepared food section, liquor, and Wegmans typical produce selection.

There are also stores that are under development in Chestnut Hill and Burlington. The Burlington store will be 140,000 square feet and it is located at 3rd Ave in Northwest Park on the Middlesex Turnpike. Also, the Chestnut Hill location will be 340,000 square feet and it will be located across from the mall at Chestnut Hill.

This will be the first Boston location for the grocery store chain, which currently operates in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

The Mayor and Wegmans CEO are considering opening a grocery store in Downtown Crossing area since it currently lacks a substantial supermarket.  Boston may soon be infiltrated with Wegmans supermarkets but this may benefit many neighborhoods. (bostonherald.com)
