Somerville’s Assembly Square progresses

Last week, Somerville’s Design Review Committee reviewed conceptual plans for Assembly Square’s mixed use Main Street development.

The design included a cluster of building with large glass displays and offices that overlook the riverfront.  The plans were laid out by Michael Giardina, Design Principal at Kling Stubbins, for two buildings in the Square.

The first is a proposed 3,600 square-foot food service and/or retail building on the plaza. The second is a 132,700 square-foot mixed-use building which will consist of retail on the bottom floors and offices above. The development hopes to incorporate the public, including room for public art and retail friendly spaces.

Many members were comfortable with the design; however, some though the back side which faces the river was too plain. One suggestion heard in the meeting was to cut down on the usage of glass for the office building by incorporating more brick.
