Union Square revitalization begins

Somerville officials have embarked on the first phase of development in the Union Square Revitalization Plan. The city has begun the process of acquiring land surrounding the proposed Union Square Station. Acquiring 22 parcels, either by purchase or eminent domain, will cost an estimated $4.6 million. The first phase is essential for the development project, which will cost an estimated $90 million.

A large portion of the acquired land will be utilized by the MBTA for the extension of the Green Line into Union Square. The other parcels will be set aside for further development in the future.

The total area of the parcels is 170,000 square feet and the city has already begun reaching out to owners of the 22 parcels in question.
